“Demon 1: Woke” (2023)

Part 1 from the series My demons is about Woke and all that is wrong with this aggressive way of trying to determine between “good” and “bad”. I am all for the initiatives which are in hashtags on the painting, but very much against the way in which woke people are pushing and not seeing any nuance or room for discussion and interpretation.
In the paintings are skulls based on the famous skulls from Basquiat, who I pay tribute to with the crown with a T in the painting. Woke people would call this ‘artistic appropriation’ probably, especially since I am a middle-aged, privileged white male, to me it was the perfect way to portray and combine the two subjects I call my demons, as these subjects bring out the worst in me.
